Painting inspired by photographs of Ozias Leduc reproduced in a documentary made by filmmaker Michel Brault in 1996, for the National Film Board of Canada, recounting the life of the artist Ozias Leduc, titled: Ozias Leduc... comme l’espace et le temps. Everything indicates that the Abenaki frequented Mont Saint-Hilaire to offer sacrifices to their deities. They reportedly called it Wigwomadensis, which means "hill shaped like a wigwam". This painting could just as well be called: Long Ago at Mont Saint-Hilaire.
I entered this painting in the fall salon competition of the Musée des beaux-arts de Mont-Saint-Hilaire, whose exhibition has as its theme 150 Variations on Space and Time... I wished thereby to commemorate the work of the artist Ozias Leduc, born in Saint-Hilaire, Québec, Canada, in 1864, who was a dominant figure in Québécois painting.
He was a versatile artist, a symbolist painter, a church decorator and a photographer, just as my father Gérard was.
This fall salon is held at the Musée des beaux-arts de Mont-Saint-Hilaire, located at 150, rue du Centre-Civique in Mont Saint-Hilaire, until Sunday, October 31, 2010, at 1:00 p.m... The world and time were created together... said the monk Saint Augustine, pointing out in passing the inseparability of time and space. Oriented from the past to the future, time allows us to remember, to imagine, to put into perspective, while space represents the form of our sensory experience, a construction of the mind that contains our perceptions.
The work of art has this singular faculty of joining the two, fixing within itself all the power of creation, at a given place and time. The work confers permanence upon things.
