Maison Joseph-Amable Côté ,3105 rue Girouard

This magnificent ancestral house has a fine history for

having belonged to an important shoe manufacturer from Saint-Hyacinthe.

This painting was purchased by Mrs. L.C. who is also one of my collectors

with her partner Y.L... on the evening of the second edition of the OPEN HOUSE

at the Atelier d’Art Y. Morier during a VIP OPENING, on September 11, 2025.

This house belonged to Mr. Joseph-Amable Côté, an industrialist well known in the shoe trade. At the turn of the 20th century, he owned, with his brothers Magloire and then Alfred, a major shoe factory known under the name J.A. et M Côté, founded in 1865 by their half-brothers Louis, Georges and Victor under the business name Louis Côté & Frères. At one time, the factory had 320 employees and produced over $400,000 worth of shoes. In the 1930s, his son Eugène Côté took over. Having experienced a post-war slowdown, the company closed its doors in 1969, more than 100 years after its founding.

This house was built between 1867 and 1883 for Mr. Joseph Boulanget. Mr. Côté bought this house located at 3105 rue Girouard in 1906. The maison Côté is a picturesque construction in the neo-Gothic style with an irregular arrangement of volumes, the presence of bay windows, the woodwork on the front gable

and under the cornice shaped like a Chinese abacus, and the finial dominating the facade.

This wood residence, embellished with an off-centre tower with a conical roof and a gallery encircling the building, has been very well preserved. Mr. Côté remained the owner of this house until his death in 1929. It was bequeathed to his wife Carolie Richer and their children, then his daughters Berthe and Jeanne became owners in 1936.
